Commissioners to discuss tax listings

County residents have only a little more than a month left before they have to start thinking about taxes.
The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will discuss the 2007 tax listing period during its meeting Tuesday morning.
The listing period for next year will be Jan. 2-31, Wayne Tax Administrator David Ward said. Residents can list their real and personal property at the tax department, which is located on the first floor of the county courthouse, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday. Listings can also be mailed in at Wayne County Tax Department, P.O. Box 227, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533.
Any resident with real or personal property who doesn't list it during January is subject to a 10 percent penalty of the taxes levied, Ward said. It is a Class 2 misdemeanor for anyone who fails to list his property, he added.
Real or personal property that must be listed includes real estate, tangible personal property and all licensed motor vehicles, Ward said.
All real estate in the county is permanently listed and is automatically charged to the owner every Jan. 1, but if an improvement was made since the last listing, that person or business must report those improvements to the tax office.
Tangible personal property includes any machinery, fixtures, equipment, unlicensed vehicles, boats, motors, jet skis, wave runners, airplanes or mobile homes, Ward said.
Any mobile home that is livable, or is being lived in, will have a minimum value of $1,000. All licensed motor vehicles will be taxed according to state law. The tax values of airplanes, boats and motors and mobile homes are assessed by the tax office by using the Aircraft Bluebook, Vessel Valuation Services Inc. and Tec Data Systems Inc., respectively, Ward said. Tax listers can provide those values to the public at the tax office.
Everyone who resides in the county at the beginning of the year, whether temporarily or not, is required to list property with the county, Ward said.
In other business, commissioners will hear a presentation by the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.
The commissioners meet on the fourth floor of the county courthouse at 9 a.m., which is preceded by a briefing session at 8 a.m.
