College plans alumni events

MOUNT OLIVE -- Hundreds of alumni are expected to return to their alma mater next weekend to participate in Mount Olive College's annual Homecoming.
The festivities will begin Nov. 17 at 7:30 a.m. with a business breakfast briefing in the Hennessee Room of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Dr. Kenneth Stokes, dean of the Tillman School of Business, will share his vision on the business environment and the role of the Tillman School of Business in the region. The cost of the event is $15 per person.
The 10th annual Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament will begin at noon at Southern Wayne Country Club near Mount Olive. The 18-green, Superball tournament costs $48 per person.
At 1 p.m., the third annual Alumni Science Luncheon, hosted by the Henderson Science Club, will meet in the Hennessee Room of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Guest speaker will be Samanthi Wijesekera, a 2005 graduate of Mount Olive College. Her presentation is titled "Learning to Live Again: The Ecological and Psycho-
logical Aftermath of the 2004 Asian Tsunami." Cost for lunch is $5 per person.
A Free Spirit Concert and dinner reunion will be held in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center Alumni Dining Room at 5:30 p.m. Cost for the dinner is $6.
The 41st annual Pickle Classic Tournament will be Friday and Saturday. Friday night's tip-off begins at 6 p.m. with Coker vs. Chowan, followed by MOC Trojans vs. Ohio Valley University at 8 p.m. The consolation game begins at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship game at 6:30.
Tickets for the Pickle Classic are $10 for both nights and can be purchased at Kornegay Arena. Children 4 and younger are admitted free. To purchase advance tickets or for additional information, contact Tina Parks at 658-2502, ext. 1241.

For the exercise enthusiast, the Henderson Science Club and the Recreation Majors Club are jointly hosting a Cystic Fibrosis 2K walk/5K run at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
All former and present teachers, social workers and psychology professionals are encouraged to attend the second annual Education Seminar and first Psychology Seminar on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Located in the Southern Bank Auditorium of Raper Hall, the seminar titled, "Learning Differences vs. Learning Disabilities," will be led by Dr. Linda Stevenson Budd, Class of 1969, formerly of Goldsboro.
At 10:45 a.m., Alumni Awards and Recognition will be presented in the Hennessee Room of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Among those presentations will be the college's Alumnus of the Year.
At 11:30 a.m. at the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field, there will be a Softball Field Donor Recognition ceremony followed by an alumni softball game at noon.
A reunion buffet lunch featuring the MOC Singers will be held at 12:15 p.m. in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. The public is invited to attend.
The seventh annual Criminal Justice Seminar will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Rodgers Chapel. The topic will be "Hate Crimes" by Eloise Melvin, instructor with the N.C. Department of Justice.
Five MOC alumni will be recognized at the College's first Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which will take place in the Hennessee Room at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The event is free and open to the public. Make reservations by Nov. 13 by calling Tina Parks at 658-7759.
Also at 1:30 p.m., Julie Beck will lead a "Travelogue on 13 Eastern European Countries" in the Henderson classroom building.
Throughout the afternoon on Saturday there will be an art exhibit titled "Incarna-tions in the Present" by Kerri Henrickson Eckes, Class of 1999. This event will be held in Laughinghouse Hall and is open to the public.
Activities for children will start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with games, clowns and inflatable fun sponsored by the Undergraduate Alumni Association and the Classes of 1991 and 1996. Children's classes include "Chalk Art" hosted by the MOC Art Club, and "Who Owns these Bones?" taught by Angela Foster, assistant professor of science and mathematics at MOC. The public is invited to tour new buildings on the campus during an open house Satur-day afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m.
The dedication of the W. Burkette and Rose M. Raper Hall will take place in the auditorium at 3 p.m. with former Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. as keynote speaker. Following the ceremony will be a reception and open house.
An old-fashioned country dinner will start at 5 p.m. And following the Pickle Classic Championship Game, there will be an After the Game Party hosted by the Class of 1976. All alumni are invited to the Southern Wayne Country Club, with music provided by Bryan Rouse.
The culmination of the Mount Olive College Homecoming Weekend will take place Sunday morning at 10 with a memorial service at the Alumni Cross Walk, followed by a worship service in Rodgers Chapel. Leading the memorial service will be Nettie Hansley Woodall, Class of 1956, and Tim Mann, Class of 1989. A Sunday buffet will be served at 11:30 a.m.
