The Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the death of a man who was found in the median this morning along U.S. 70 near the Elroy Volunteer Fire Depart-ment, lawmen said.
Wayne County Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said the sheriff's office received a call at about 7:30 a.m., alerting authorities of the body. Deputies, patrolmen and Elroy firefighters responded to the scene.
A white tarp covered the body as detectives searched for any clues to the identity of the man.
He was described by investigators only as a white male, possibly in his mid-40s.
No other information was released. Investigators said there were continuing to try to identify the man and how his body came to be in the median.
The investigation was continuing at press time.
