The staff at Cherry Hospital hope they have the recipe for a successful fundraiser -- the third edition of an employee-generated cookbook first introduced more than 20 years ago.
"The Melting Pot III" was originally produced in 1983, with another version printed in 1995. Its name was derived from the fact that Cherry Hospital has so many nationalities represented on staff, said Shelley Flores from staff development.
All of the 482 recipes in the book were contributed by employees and retirees, she said. Artwork inside the book was done by adolescents from Cherry's River Bend School, but the cover illustration remains true to the original concept.
The $10 cookbook went on sale in September and can be purchased through the special services department or in the Cherry Museum. Proceeds will be divided between two causes -- Relay for Life and the hospital's "Forgotten Patient Fund."
Ms. Flores, along with Terry Benton and Alyce Toler, are co-captains of the Cherry Hospital Relay for Life team. The cookbook, they said, is also dedicated to employees and retirees who have battled cancer.
The "Forgotten Patient Fund" benefits indigent patients at Cherry and affords them spending money for such items as snacks and soda.
"It's totally supported by fundraisers and volunteer contributions," said Tanya Rollins, special services director, who explained that the fund translates to $12 a month to those in need.
Cherry provides on average about $600 a month to an estimated 50 patients who utilize the fund.
