Woman injured in collision with train

A Goldsboro woman was injured Thursday when a train plowed into her automobile on Community Drive near Rosewood High School causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

Taherah Shante Simms, 18, of Millbrook Village Drive, was traveling south on N.C. 581 at about 6:30 p.m. when her vehicle was struck by a Norfolk-Southern train, according to the Highway Patrol report.

The force of the collision pushed Simms' 2002 Toyota automobile about 89 feet away into a ditch. Ms. Simms was alone in the vehicle, according to the report.

Neal C. Lee III, 36, of Garner, the driver of the train, and his three passengers, Mike Talbot, 39, of Raleigh, Jared Costello, 22, of Garner and Anthony C. Sydnor, 22, of Raleigh, were not injured in the accident.

Units of the Rosewood Volunteer Fire Department, Wayne County Emergency Medical Services and the Highway Patrol responded to the accident.

Ms. Simms, who received minor injuries, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to the report.

Her vehicle, which was owned by Shelia Hinnant Bradley of Goldsboro, sustained $6,000 in damage. Ms. Simms was cited for failure to yield, according to the report.
