Man charged with assault on woman

Wayne County Sheriff's Office deputies charged a man with assault on a female today after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend and then tried to set her mobile home afire.
Damages to the home of Lisa Joy Hood on Thunder Swamp Road were estimated at about $30,000, officials said.
Joseph Irving Powell Jr., 33, of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, was charged by deputies following the incident, which involved an argument and fight, investigators said.
Firefighters with the Smith Chapel, Mount Olive and Dudley volunteer departments responded to the emergency call.
Deputies located Powell after the 3:15 a.m. incident.
He was being held today in the Wayne County Jail without benefit of bond.
