Hammered,
then shot
Derrick Lamar McLean of Sycamore Street in Fremont was listed in stable condition this morning after an altercation at a house on Astor Court around 5 a.m. Saturday. McLean said the man he was fighting with hit him in the face with a hammer and then shot him in the leg. The report said he refused to press charges.
Investigations
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating these reports:
*Thieves broke into the house that Randy Allen Cabe was moving out of on N.C. 111 South and stole two televisions, two television DVD combinations, two VCRs, two DVD players, CB equipment, two watches, a guitar and amplifier, 25 DVDs and video tapes and two stereos with speakers, all valued at $7,500. Cabe told investigators he was in the process of moving to Chocowinity.
*Detectives are investigating a first degree burglary that occurred Sunday night at the home of a Dudley woman. She said three armed men who appeared to be in their 20s broke into her son's gun cabinet in his bedroom and took a shotgun and two handguns. One was a black powder pistol. Damage to the gun cabinet was $200. The woman said when the men knocked on the door she thought they were her son returning home. She said when she opened the door she saw one "long gun" and a handgun. One stood on the front porch and another with her while the third gunman went through the house. She said all three wore hoods.
*A break-in at the home of Jeffrey Stephenson Parks on Smith Farm Road ended with the loss of $4,000 worth of jewelry plus items valued at another $1,000 including a Playstation 2, 28 games and two change jars. Parks said he and his family went out of town Friday, and when they returned home Saturday, he found the garage window open.
*The home of Thomas Woodrow Rice in Mobile Circle in Dudley was broken in to. Thieves entered through ae rear door and took a surround sound system, a VCR, a DVD player, jewelry and a scanner, all valued at $4,350. Damage to the door was $400.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Robin Denise Smith of Lime Street was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a woman she was fighting with cut her with a razor. She said the fight broke out at an apartment on John Street shortly after midnight Saturday.
*Princess Williams Branch of Evergreen Avenue said in April a man told her that he worked for HUD and could get her a house with low payments. She said she paid him $3,000 over six months and never received the promised house.
Accident
Both drivers were charged after an accident Saturday on Berkeley Boulevard. Two young passengers were treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Goldsboro police said David Matthew Long of Lufberry Drive was charged with failure to see before starting and Alan Reid of Biltmore Drive with driving in the center lane when the movement could not be done safely. Damage to each of the vehicles was estimated at $9,000.
Clarification
A Sunday story about the Health Department's preparation for the upcoming flu season indicated that the ordering process for the vaccine began in August. David Hesselmeyer, bioterrorism coordinator for the Health Department, said that planning for this year's flu clinic began in August. The vaccine was ordered in January, he said.
