Mount Olive requiring trash bins be screened from view

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive businesses are being told to screen their outdoor trash bins from view.
Town Building Inspector Danny Keel has started delivering letters to all of the town's businesses this week, reminding them that they have until Dec. 11 to put up the screens.
The Town Board approved the requirement in September, saying they wanted to improve the town's appearance. Many towns have similar ordinances in place, they noted.
Town Manager Charles Brown said any new business considering a move to Mount Olive asks about whether the town has such a restriction.
Mount Olive officials feel the town could be on the verge of a business boom. Wal-Mart is building a store on the northwest side of town and other businesses are expected to follow the retail giant.
Many Mount Olive businesses already have screened their bins, Brown noted.
"They just decided it was the right thing to do," he said.
Existing businesses have 90 days from the adoption of the ordinance to comply. New businesses will automatically be required to build a fence or other obstruction around their bins, according to the ordinance.
Screens or fences must be certain requirements. Keel suggested businesses notify his department before installation to ensure the obstruction will meet the requirements. His office phone number is 658-9538. Hours at the Inspections Department at City Hall are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Keel said he has copies of the ordinance available for anybody who would like to pick one up.
