Man chases driver with gun near businesses

A case of road rage nearly erupted into gun violence Tuesday morning on South Berkeley Boulevard.
Goldsboro police responded to the road rage call about 11 a.m. after the male victim called to report the incident, Capt. Mike Conerly said. The victim told police that a man threatened him with a gun, he said.
"He was driving south on Berkeley. A guy came up from behind him and said 'Hey, you cut me off' and pointed a gun at him," Conerly said.
The armed motorist threatened the victim while the two vehicles drove side-by-side on the heavily congested thoroughfare, Conerly explained.
Eager to escape the armed motorist who was driving a red Ford Focus, the other driver pulled into a nearby parking lot. The armed motorist possibly followed, but the other driver cut through the parking lot of The Goldsboro News-Argus and got away, Conerly said.
Goldsboro police searched the congested business district for the gunman. After learning that the gunman might still be in the area, some businesses including the News-Argus went on a brief lockdown while the search for the gunman was under way. Police were unable to find the gunman or the victim, Conerly said.
"All of this came over the phone because the victim got out of the area," Conerly said. "We never found either person."
