The blue skies above Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will be transformed into a virtual playground Oct. 15 during the Wings Over Wayne Airshow as the military showcases some of its finest aircraft.
The airshow, which is the one of Wayne County's premier events, typically draws 60,000 to 75,000 spectators, officials said. And military personnel are ecstatic about the event.
"Seymour Johnson AFB is proud to host the Wings Over Wayne Airshow and Open House again this year," base officials said. "The 4th Fighter Wing continues to play a significant role in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and is looking forward to showcasing the awesome aircraft and airmen that are doing such a fantastic job."
The event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature performances from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Navy F-18C Demo Team, U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and the homegrown F-15E Strike Eagle Demonstration Team. It will be the Strike Eagle's first performance at the event, officials said.
The show is free to the public and food vendors will be on hand at the event.
More than 19 prized military aircrafts including the AH-65 Apache, EA-6B Prowler, F-16 Fighting Falcon and USCG C-130 Hercules will be on display. Decorative warbirds, civilian aircraft along with the Air Force's Nascar Show Car also will be on display.
The air show will also mark the kickoff for a year-long celebration leading up to the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, officials added.
While officials want everyone to enjoy themselves at the airshow, there are a few do's and don'ts that they want you to note.
Visitors will be allowed to bring lawnchairs and cameras, but large camera bags, backpacks, coolers and weapons including firearms, leathermans and pocketknives are prohibited at the base.
Identification will be required to enter the gate and parking will be free. For more information visit the Web site at www.seymourjohnson.af.mil/airshow.
