charged
A Goldsboro man faces criminal charges for allegedly beating his stepdaughter on the legs with a wooden dowel rod after she allegedly took a pack of gum from a kitchen drawer.
Travis Rex Crawford, 40, of Hubert Drive, was arrested Wednesday by members of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department on a charge of assault on a child, Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom said.
Crawford was being held at the Wayne County Jail under $5,000 secured bond.
An arrest warrant also has been issued for Jamie Crawford, the mother of the child, Odom said Friday.
"The child had visible injuries on her legs," Odom said.
Rex's 11-year-old stepdaughter also had bruises on her arms, Odom said. Rex allegedly held the child down during the assault, Odom said.
Odom, who handles child abuse and sexual abuse cases at the department, called the incident "a shame."
"Anytime a child is abused, it's heartbreaking," Odom said. "It is a parent's responsibility to provide safety for their children."
Johnston County school officials noticed the injuries on the child and reported the incident. The Department of Social Services in Wayne County is assisting in the case. More charges could be forthcoming, Odom added.
Armed robbery
Dionco Rolaan Hamilton told Goldsboro police that two masked men dressed in black approached him at his vehicle on East Elm Street late Thursday, waved a handgun and demanded money. Hamilton gave the robbers two cell phones, valued at $200 and $45. He said he ran and they shot at him, striking him in the left hip and right thigh.
Accidents
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $7,200 in three recent traffic accidentss in Wayne County, officers reported.
*No one was injured in a two-vehicle crash that involved a Wayne County School bus and a Goldsboro Fire Department ladder truck that occurred on Thoroughfare Road near Central Heights Road. Bus driver Fannie Elizabeth Williams was cited for a safe movement violation. Total damges were estimated at $900.
*James Bridges, the driver of a U-haul truck, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the truck ran into an overpass on Carolina Street near Vine Street. A passenger, Maxine Williams, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Damages were estimated at $5,000.
*George Capps was charged with failure to avoid an accident after his pickup was involved in a wreck with a motorcycle operated by Michael Alonza Croom on Wayne Memorial Drive near Handley Park Court. Croom suffered minor injuries. Total damages were estimated at $1,300.
