Quilting bee Saturday to raise money for breast cancer research

From Local quilting enthusiasts are invited to come together Saturday for the first-every Quilt Pink Day to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event will be held at the Thistle Bee Quilt Shoppe at 2707-E Royall Ave. in the Victorian Village, starting at 10 a.m. and running until 3 p.m.
The event is part of a national fund-raising campaign, with quilters across the nation making pink and white quilt block at local shops. The blocks will then be pieced together and the finished quilts sent to Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork & Quilting magazine for an online auction to be held in May.
Proceeds from the auction will be presented to the Komen Foundation to help fund breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
Mary Ellen McInnis, the owner of Thistle Bee Quilt Shoppe, said she sees Quilt Pink Day as much more than just another fundraiser.
"This is an opportunity to honor and remember all friends and family who have been touched by this disease," she said.
Refreshments will be provided, McInnis added.
Quilters are encouraged to call ahead but walk-ins are welcome as well.
Experienced quilter are urged to take part in order to help beginners with their sewing.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister,who died from breast cancer.
