Opening day at the Fair

For starters, grab a corn-dog smothered in ketchup and mustard. Then hit the trails for the rest of a four-course meal that only comes around once a year -- turkey legs, cotton candy and an elephant ear or two for dessert.
Food and livestock lovers will join thrill-seekers from across the state at the Wayne County Fairgrounds today, as the 58th annual Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair opens its gates to the public.
Some showed up this morning with hopes of walking away from the nine-day affair with an elusive blue ribbon. By the time Power's Great American Midway opens at 4 p.m., a few who submitted educational booth entries will already have theirs.
Tonight's activities include something for just about everybody. Highlights include the Open Junior Meat Goat Show in the grandstand at 6 p.m. and the Western Gun Fight Show at 8:30 p.m. in Western Town.
Fair Director Milton Ingram said it's hard to predict just how many people will come through the gates this morning and evening.
"On opening day, we have no earthly idea," he said. "We just have beaucoups of people in here already. They'll just stay and make a day of it."
And while more than 100 people have already been in and out of the gates setting up today and hundreds more are expected by nightfall, Ingram said he expects the biggest crowds will turnout this weekend.
