Vehicle tumbles as driver travels down Tommy's Road

A Goldsboro man was charged with drunken driving and speeding after a single-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on Tommy's Road near Tommy's Road Elementary School, officials with the state Highway Patrol said.
Pablo Lazo, 28, of 204 Spence Ave., was pinned inside the 2004 Ford van he was driving for about 45 minutes before rescue workers could extricate him. Witnesses said the van flipped over several times before coming to rest against a tree.
The accident happened about 1 p.m.
Nina Moore, the driver of another vehicle on the road at the same time, said the van ran her car off the road.
"I pulled over to move out of his way. He was driving in both lanes and going off the road. He was going about 80 miles an hour. He came up on my bumper. If I had not pulled over he would have hit me. I was going to get my baby from school. He flew past me. He was flying," she said.
A Highway Patrol spokesman said Lazo was taken by helicopter to Pitt Memorial Hospital but a hospital spokesman said today that they had no record of his being admitted.
In addition to law enforcement offices, firefighters from Pinewood, El-Roy and New Hope responded to the alarm.
Torleta Jones, who lives near the scene of the accident, said she saw Lazo's vehicle overturn.
"It was like he jumped the ditch and kept flipping. We thought he was going to keep coming. Thank God for that tree," she said.
