PIKEVILLE -- A Kenly man was killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle collision on N.C. Highway 581 North between Princeton-Pikeville and Nahunta roads.
Preston Lewis Valentine, 68, of 1111 Pinkney Road, was traveling north on Highway 581 on his moped, Trooper J.F. Davis said.
Valentine attempted to turn left on Kiowa Place into Pike's Landing subdivision, when his moped was struck by a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Randy Lee Mills, 48, of 384 Mills Road.
"Both of the men were traveling north on Highway 581," Davis said. "The Suburban attempted to go around the moped and the moped attempted to turn left into the subdivision."
Valentine died at the scene, Davis said. Mills was not injured in the collision.
The trooper said Valentine was well-known in the community.
Emergency crews responded to the scene at about 2 p.m. to help clear the accident.
No charges or citations have been issued in connection with Tuesday's fatality since the investigation is still pending, Davis said. Speed, alcohol or drugs were not contributing factors in the crash, he added.
No witnesses have come forward, Davis said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Highway Patrol Office at 919-731-7960.
