Girl Scouts get grant to study woodpecker

The Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina has received an Earthpact Grant from Girl Scouts of the USA and funding from International Paper to support innovative and ongoing wildlife conservation activities for girls that benefit local native animals.
The red-cockaded woodpecker population that lives at Camp Pretty Pond has been considered endangered since 1970. The woodpecker makes its home in longleaf pine trees, which makes Camp Pretty Pond in Brunswick County and the surrounding areas an ideal home for this species.
The project allows for 150 girls to become familiar with the woodpecker, its environment and its lifestyle.
Girls participated in field sessions during the three weeks of resident camp this summer, and five weekends are being planned for the 2006-07 school year to allow girls to spend the night at Camp Pretty Pond and learn more about this endangered species making its home there
