RALEIGH -- A Goldsboro man pleaded guilty Monday in Wake County Superior Court to five charges of obtaining property by false pretense.
Marcellus P. Johnson, 50, of 308 Wood St., was sentenced to three consecutive terms of 8-10 months in prison by Judge Stafford G. Bullock.
Investigators with the state Department of Revenue said Jackson made false payments to the department from closed bank accounts totaling $216,199 in an attempt to cause the state to issue income tax refunds greater than he was entitled to receive. He admitted to having received and cashed refund checks totaling $11,935 and making false payments even after being informed that his actions could result in criminal charges.
