One young man was killed and another injured in a one-car crash in Duplin County late Monday evening, N.C. State Highway Patrol officials said.
Brad Barwick, 24, was pronounced dead on the scene when he and Scott Hargrove, 29, were found nearly seven hours after the crash Tuesday morning. Hargrove was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital for treatment and remains in serious condition.
Trooper Steven Wilson said a preliminary investigation found that the wreck most likely occurred between 11 and 11:30 p.m., but the time is currently listed as unknown.
"We do think it was later in the night," he said. "I'm guessing around 11:15 or so."
Wilson added it appears the driver lost control of his Chevrolet truck, which ran off the road to the right, crossed back over into a ditch on the left side of the road and eventually flipped multiple times before striking a utility pole. Hargrove was driving, investigators said.
Both men were ejected from the vehicle, Wilson said.
Early reports point to speed as a factor in the wreck, he added. Investigators have not determined any other cause for the crash.
Wilson added he plans to drive to Greenville to visit Hargrove and gain more information about the events that led to the fatal crash. After he does so, the final accident report will be completed.
