Electronic recycling at Sam's Club Saturday

More than 140 tons of computers and other electronics have been collected by the county since it began its electronics recycling drives more than three years ago. Residents can continue to contribute to this growing amount this weekend.
Wayne County recycling coordinator Simonne Cato said the county will hold an electronics recycling drive in the parking lot of Sam's Club off of Parkway Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Any electronics excluding appliances will be accepted by Franklin's Recycling during the drive. This includes personal computers, printers, keyboards, scanners, monitors, circuit boards and hard drives.
Anyone recycling an inkjet or laser printer should remember to remove the cartridge from the printer and bring both items to the drive, Mrs. Cato said.
Other office equipment, such as telephones, cellular phones, answering machines, pagers and typewriters, will also be accepted, Mrs. Cato said.
Even entertainment equipment, such as cameras, televisions, videocassette recorders and camcorders, will be recycled by Franklin's Recycling.
None of the materials will be taken to overseas markets, Mrs. Cato said. Instead, Franklin's Recycling will refurbish as much equipment as possible. Anything that can't be refurbished will be stripped of its components to be reused.
Earlier this year, residents recycled about 53,000 pounds of electronics and Mrs. Cato said she hopes even more will be recycled during Saturday's drive.
