Suspect will face assault charges

A Goldsboro man will face charges in connection with a Labor Day shooting that left a 21-year-old man seriously injured.
Ronald Edwards of Courtyard Circle told police a man he knew opened fire on him about 12:45 p.m. Monday while he was standing in an open field, according to Goldsboro police reports. The incident occurred in the 100 block of West Elm Street, police said.
Edwards was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Amy Cain said. Details regarding the extent of his injuries and the location of his wound were unavailable due to federal privacy laws, Ms. Cain said.
Police arrested the alleged gunman and another man on unrelated charges during a traffic stop nearly 11 hours after the shooting. The men were spotted in a black Chevrolet Caprice on Magnolia and Daisy streets, police said.
James Hubert Leonard Jr., 28, of South Leslie Street, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. Leonard also was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude arrest, driving on a revoked license, and resisting, delaying and obstruction of an officer. He was being held at the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond.
A passenger, 42-year-old Todd Michael Hall of North George Street was arrested on unrelated charges for resisting, delaying and obstruction of an officer during the traffic stop. He was being held in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500 bond.
Goldsboro police Chief Tim Bell declined to provide details concerning where Edwards was shot, the extent of his injuries or the events that lead to the shooting fearing that he would jeopardize the case. Bell also did not identify the type of weapon used in the shooting.
