Student enrollment for the fall semester at Wayne Community College is up by 100 students, officials said Monday, the first day of classes.
By the end of campus registration on Friday, there were 3,149 students enrolled for college credit classes. The head count may go up even more after registration on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for the second eight-week session in October.
President Ed Wilson said the numbers are back up to the school's 2004 numbers.
"We took a hit last year with the closing of the prison facility on the base, the deployment of airmen, and the graduation of many displaced workers," he said.
The increase is also significant since officials have heard from other community colleges that enrollment is down, Wilson added.
"Traditionally our enrollment drops when the economy is good and increases when the local economy is bad," he said.
