Mount Olive inspection fees increased

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive town board increased inspection fees for building and fire inspections Monday during a special callled meeting at Town Hall.
Town Manager Charles Brown said Mount Olive was behind the times in the inspection fees.
"The fees should generate enough income to pay about half the expenses in the (inspections) department," he said. "We weren't quite there."
The new rates are $60 if your new addition is up to $15,000 worth of work, $75 if the project costs up to $50,000 and $110 for jobs that cost more. Storage buildings are inspected for $55, garages for $75 and decks and porches for $30. Repairs and renovations are inspected for $40 when the cost of the work is up to $5,000.
Brown said the new rate is about a 30 percent increase.
"But we're still a little lower than Wayne County and Goldsboro," he added.
The board reimplemented a $125 deposit for new water accounts.
Brown saidthe Local Government Commission mandated the deposit be reinstated.
"We need something up front to protect the town in case of default," he added.
The board also approved a four-lot expansion to Bobby Denning's residential subdivision.
