A shooting took the lives of two Goldsboro men Monday night while they were traveling along the 900 block of Olivia Lane.

James Lee Croom, 24, of Bizzell Court, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car he was driving, Trasond Javoy Gerald, 20, of Prince Avenue, died later at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A third man walking down the street at the time, Otavis Gerquel McKinnon, 18, of Courtyard Circle, was wounded. He was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The shooting occurred at 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of Olivia Lane and Crawford Street, when Goldsboro police said an unknown assailant fired into Croom's 2006 Dodge Stratus.

After shots were fired, the car ran off of the road and up onto the sidewalk.

Sgt. David Kelly said investigators know what type of firearm was used in the shooting but said the information would not be released yet as officers are still trying to determine what led to the shooting.

Investigators are continuing to follow leads they received last night, Kelly said. Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255 or the Goldsboro Police Department at 580-4217 or 580-4210.

The fatalities were the third and fourth in the city this year.
