United Way started its 2006 campaign Tuesday with 16 percent of its goal already met.

Frontrunners and early company campaigns raised a total of $236,858 to improve 5,623 lives in Wayne County, according to Steve Parr, United Way director.

Frontrunners are businesses and groups that conduct their employee drives before the general campaign begins. They set an example for the rest of the community and build momentum for the campaign.

Their results were announced prior to the Taste of Wayne County.

*The Goldsboro News-Argus raised $18,465 to improve 370 lives.

*Moffatt Oil Co. raised $3,432 to improve 68 lives.

*The Wayne County Public Library raised $6,041 to improve 120 lives.

*Cooper Bussmann raised $18,723 to improve 375 lives.

*Security Storage Co. raised $7,230 to improve 145 lives.

*APV Turkington (partial report) raised $4,267, 50 percent of its 2006 goal.

*APV Heat Exchange (partial report) raised $4,774 and has already exceeded last year's goal.

*Wayne Community College (partial report) raised $10,000.

Not a Frontrunner, but conducting an early campaign was Pittard Perry and Crone, which raised $6,385 to improve 127 lives.

Parr said United Way kicked off its 2006 campaign two weeks early this year. "Year-to-date, we are ahead of where we were at this time last year."

This year's goal is $1,44 million to improve 28,800 lives.

The campaign will conclude around Thanksgiving.
