County public hearings Tuesday

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will hold two public hearings during their meeting Tuesday morning.
One of the hearings, which will begin at 9:15 a.m., concerns the commissioners' adopted amendment to the Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance banning cardboard from the county landfill.
Effective Sept. 1, no individual, solid waste collector nor municipality will be permitted to deliver loads to the landfill that contain cardboard or 10 percent by volume of other recyclables such as newspapers, magazines, glass bottles, jars, aluminum cans and plastic drink containers.
If loads are brought in that do have cardboard or a large amount of other recyclables, the carrier will be charged a larger tipping fee.
The county's current tipping fee is $23 per ton, but would increase to $200 for the first violation, $400 for the second and $600 for the third and any subsequent violation.
The other public hearing concerns changing the name of Party Road, between Nahunta and Hinnant roads near Pikeville, to Ivey Lane. In June, the county's Planning Board unanimously approved the name change for the commissioners approval after a majority of the road's residents signed a petition in favor of it.

In other business, commissioners will hear from Geoff Hulse, chairman of the Wayne County United Way campaign, and from two of their own committees -- a special recognition committee and an appointments committee.
Commissioners also will consider proposals from a half dozen lending institutions to provide financing for equipment purchases.
County commissioner meetings begin at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the Wayne County Courthouse. The meeting is preceded by a briefing session that begins at 8 a.m.
