City officials pledge support to United Way

Goldsboro City Council took action on a zoning request and heard about the United Way at its meeting Monday.
During the requests and petitions of citizens portion of the meeting, local attorney Geoffrey Hulse spoke to council members about this year's United Way campaign and encouraged elected officials to support the effort.
"Many of you have contributed to the United Way," he said. "I think it's important for the governing body of the city of Goldsboro to be supportive of the United Way."
The group hopes to raise close to $1.5 million this year, Hulse added. But in recent years, support from the city has dwindled, he said.
"My sole concern is that over the last couple of years, large groups have given less," Hulse said. "We ask that you give it a concentrated effort. We want people to give because it's the right thing to do."
Mayor Al King assured Hulse that the city supports the United Way and will help in whatever way it can.
"As you know, the city is a strong supporter of the United Way," he said. "We did fall down a little bit last year, but you can rest assure you have our support."
In other business, council members approved a request made by V.M. McHarness to rezone property, located on Jefferson Street near the intersection of Ash and Peachtree streets. The property was rezoned from residential to neighborhood business.
At the request of the Planning Commission, the council deferred another zoning request, one from BRC Goldsboro. Property owners requested that 120 residential units be added to their site, located on West New Hope Road between Cuyler Best Road and South Harding Drive. The matter will come before the council for action in September, King said.
