JSCC offers degree in grape, wine production

James Sprunt Community College will be the first school in the state to offer a degree in growing grapes.
North Carolina ranks 10th in grape production and 12th in wine production and interest in the business is growing.
JSCC received permission from the state Board of Community Colleges to offer a two-year associate degree in viticulture and enology technology. Viticulture is the production of grapes and the various uses of grapes and enology is the making of wine.
The school will begin offering a one-year certificate program on grape growing and wine making in the fall semester, which begins Aug. 17. Registration is Aug. 16.
The program will focus on the muscadine grape and its varieties. Information about the certificate and two-year programs is available by calling the Vocational and Technical Education Department at 910-296-2532.
