Starbucks almost ready to open

Coffee junkies only have about another month to wait before Goldsboro's new Starbucks opens its door, the project's general contractor said this week.
Darrell Flowers of Commercial Finish Group out of Dallas, said Monday he hopes to have the new Starbucks at Berkeley Mall ready to open by the first week in September.

"We're just getting started on the inside," he said. He had several crews working inside while Anchor Sign Co. of Charleston, S.C., put up the signs on the outside.
Goldsboro Building Inspector Ed Cianfarra said the whole inspections staff will come out when Starbucks requests the final inspection for a certificate of occupancy.
"It looks like a massive attack, with city people jumping out of their vehicles with their flashlights and their pieces of testing equipment," he said. "It looks like that to an unsuspecting person, but the general contractors are used to all that."
Everything else has gone along well so far, he said, adding that the company's contractors have been easy to work with. "They have experience all over the country, and the code is the same."
All of the contractors who perform tasks like construction work, plumbing, electricity and heating and air meet at the site with the general contractor and all of the inspectors who sign off on the different trades. The fire inspector comes, too. Altogether, there are five final inspections.
"We all go back with the fire inspector and give it one more look," Cianfarra said. "The codes are all interrelated and connect. They all talk to each other and work out all the little things."
For example, food service operations have fire suppression systems in their hoods. That piece of equipment involves the fire, heating and air and the electrical inspectors.
"I'm looking forward to Starbucks opening," said Cianfarra, who loves his cup of cappuccino on his way in to work in the morning.
