Fire destroys
Eureka home
EUREKA -- A Eureka family lost everything in a fire this weekend at their home on Davis Street Extension.
Owners Sam and Carolyn Sutton and their three children were not at home at the time the fire broke out Saturday night from a lightening strike.
Eureka Fire Chief Mike Brock said Sutton and the children had just left when the fire broke out, and Mrs. Sutton noticed their car was gone when she arrived to find the house on fire.
Faro and Fremont departments provided mutual aid.
Two firefighters from the Faro fire station were hurt while putting out the fire. Brock said one of the firemen received a burn, and the other twisted his knee.
"It was a rough night," Brock said.
The fire rekindled Sunday finished destroying the home, which was valued at $135,000, officials said.
"We spent three and a half hours putting the fire out Saturday and another two and a half hours Sunday," said Brock.
Suspicious fire
reported at Target
Goldsboro fire officials have ruled a Friday night fire in the Target parking lot as suspicious. The call came in around 11:30 p.m. Four 40-by-8 foot storage containers were on fire. Damage to store fixtures, light fixtures and ceiling tiles came to $40,000.
Officer assaulted
One of three men suspected of kicking in the back door to a woman's home assaulted the investigating officer Saturday when he responded to a call to Sherard Court.
When police arrived at the home of Martha Mullen, one of the men surrendered, and the other two ran. One of the runners, 16-year-old Decarlos Mumford, slammed the front storm door in the officer's face. The glass shattered and injured Officer Anthony Ravine, who was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital for lacerations to his face and forearm. Damage came to $400 to the front and back doors and the officer's portable radio.
Mumford was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering, resisting an officer, damage to personal property and felonious assault inflicting serious injury on an officer. His bond was set at $7,000.
Police charged Courtney Bell, 16, with misdemeanor breaking and entering. His bond was $2,000.
The third man is still at large, and the investigation continues.
Investigations
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the following crimes:
*Anastasia Hackley of West Oak Street told police somebody she knows fired a gun into her apartment, one of the shots barely missing her and causing $300 worth of damage to a window and two walls.
*Thieves broke a window to gain entry at the home of Linda Jordan on Catalpa Street and took $4,310 worth of items, including three digital cameras, two televisions, computer equipment, three cellular telephones and an antique picture frame. The break-in occurred some time after 8:15 p.m. on Friday and before Saturday afternoon.
