From staff reports

Wayne County residents are being urged to lock their doors, turn on their outdoor lights and join their neighbors Tuesday night in observance of National Night Out.

The annual event is designed to bring neighborhoods together with police to strengthen community bonds and make residents more aware of the need to fight crime. It is aimed at sending a message to thieves and other criminals that neighbors are willing to work together and with officers to halt crime.

At Herman Park, the event will be held from 6-9 p.m., with members of the Goldsboro Police Department, Goldsboro Fire Department, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, emergency services workers and other public officials on hand.

The event is being sponsored by the Goldsboro Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Goldsboro Housing Authority in conjunction with the National Association of Town Watch.

The evening will feature the fire department's Fire Safety House, vehicles on display, information booths, free food and beverages, prizes and entertainment, including performances by Miss Goldsboro Brittan Wheeler and the Goldsboro High School Marching Band.

Guest speaker will be Chief District Court Judge Joe Setzer.

For more information about the Herman Park observance, call police Cpl. Teresa Cox at 580-4256, police Cpl. Marissa Davis at 580-4238 or Cpl. Rebecca Sasser of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 705-6543.
