3 teens arrested
following break-in
Three teenagers were arrested before dawn today by Wayne County sheriff's deputies and charged with crimes in connection with a break-in at Wild Indian Gun Company at 2305 U.S. 13 North.
Sheriff's Sgt. Sherwood Daly attributed the arrests to a quick response by A-shift patrol deputies, other deputies with search dogs and two detectives.
The oldest teen, Kenneth Lamont Casper III, 16, of Kelly Springs Road, Mount Olive, was charged with felony breaking and entering and felony possession of burglary tools. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
The other two were juveniles who were not identified because of their ages. They were to be charged in juvenile petitions and turned over to juvenile authorities.
Daly said was notified by 911 dispatchers of suspicious people at the shop.
"Three black males ran from the business, a shed and a trailer into a field behind the business," he said.
One suspect was arrested by Deputy Chuck Arnold as he was walking down U.S. 13.
Deputies Ryan Sasser and Jimmy Howell arrived with their dogs, Emmy and Katie, respectively. They found the other two suspects about three hours later about two miles from the shop.
Daly said nothing had been stolen and no damage was found to the shed and the trailer.
Man wounded;
another stabbed
A man was wounded and another man was stabbed in separate weekend assaults, according to law-enforcement reports.
Sean Walter O'Brian, 35, was found Sunday night by Wayne County sheriff's deputies after he had been shot several times at his home in the 200 block of Everittsville Road near Dudley.
O'Brian was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
No arrests have been made, and the suspects have not been described.
Two sheriff's detectives, Sgt. Robert Chunn and Richard Winders, were assigned to the case.
Robert Lee Bell, 56, was stabbed Friday night in his chest, left arm and back in his home in the 400 block of West Oak Street, Goldsboro police said. Bell was treated and released from the hospital.
A witness had told police that he heard a man fall in the bedroom and then saw Bell on the floor. The witness said he heard a shout by woman threatening Bell. The first officer to arrive, J. Reinier, said he saw Bell with his shirt soaked in blood.
Bell's wife, Sandra Johnson, 40, of West Oak Street, was arrested by police and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
Body found
A man's body was found Friday in a garage next to a vacant house at 603 Isler St. He was identified today by police as Donald Lee Altman, 47, of Goldsboro.
The body was found by a neighbor at about 10 a.m. The neighbor, Junius Isler, said another man had told him that he had been inside an abandoned garage next to the house and found the man.
The first officer to arrive, Karl Rabun, and emergency personnel determined that the man was dead. Police investigators then took over the case.
The body was sent to Chapel Hill on Saturday for an autopsy. Police Sgt. David Kelly said Altman probably died from natural causes. No foul play was found from the physical findings, but a toxicology report has been received, Kelly said.
Shed fire
A shed at the Wayne County Wildlife Club on Waterview Drive was damaged over the weekend by a fire that authorities have called suspicious.
The club was being opened for members Sunday afternoon, when the door and the inside of the shed were found burned, the report said. An investigation was turned over to sheriff's detectives.
Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the building and $400 to a leaf sweeper.
Six hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $31,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $10,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 6:55 p.m. Sunday at North Audubon Avenue and Maple Street, Goldsboro police said. Ricky Derail Bunch, 20, of Rollingwood Court, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Bunch, who was going east, was charged with a safe-movement violation at a stop sign. The other driver, Elizabeth Hope Lewis, 36, of Ryan Way, was traveling south.
*Two passengers were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 4:23 p.m. Saturday on Wayne Memorial Drive near an exit ramp to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, police said. Karen W. Lee, 61, and Ramona Lynn Lee, 37, both of Antioch Road, were released after emergency-room treatment. They were riding with Donald Gene Lee, 62, of Antioch Road. The other driver, Henry Aldine Simmons Jr., 85, of Norwood Avenue, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $4,000.
*A driver backing from a driveway was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car wreck at 1:56 p.m. Thursday on Cricket Ridge Road near Baker Chapel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Christel W. VanHorn, 40, of Cricket Ridge Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with a safe-movement violation. The southbound motorist was Douglas Bryan Best, 41, of Kelly Springs Road, Mount Olive.
*A driver was injured and damages were set at $10,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end collision at 11 a.m. Wednesday on Old Jason Road near New Hope Road, the Highway Patrol said. Yesenia R. Torres-Arredondo, 20, of Old Jason Road, LaGrange, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Jose Angel Hendriquez, 45, of New Hope Road, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Gunshots damaged a car before dawn today as it was leaving the 100 block of South Running Deer Circle, deputies said. No one was injured. Damage was set at $300 to the car, owned by Kenneth Edward Clarkson.
*A three-bladed tow mower was stolen between July 16 and Saturday after a door was damaged at a shelter in the 2500 block of Stevens Mill Road, deputies said. The resident, Henry Walter Stevens, estimated the mower's value at $400 and damage at $150.
*A picture, clothing and $10 were stolen between Friday and Sunday after a window was broken at Lane Farms at 444 Eagles Nest Road, Dudley, deputies said. The property was valued at $40, and damage was set at $100.
*Four mailboxes were damaged on Radford Road, three on Neal Drive and one on Spring Branch Road between Saturday and Sunday, deputies said. Four solar lights also were damaged. Damages were estimated at $305.
*Four rims and four tires were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from the 100 block of Leavie Drive, deputies said. The resident, Glenwood Allen Anderson, put a $1,260 value on his property.
*Four tires and four rims were stolen between Friday and Saturday from the 100 block of Reavis Drive, deputies said. The resident, Hector Vasquez Robles, said his property was worth $1,300.
*A 20-gauge shotgun, six movie DVDs, a DVD player and a bicycle were stolen between Thursday and Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Daryl Drive, deputies said. The resident, Charles Linwood Shaw, estimated the value of the stolen property at $295.
Missing
A 16-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Friday to Goldsboro police. Jasmine Best of 1607 Catalpa St. was described as black, 5-feet and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When she was seen last at 2 p.m. Thursday, she was wearing a black blouse and jean shorts. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
