Man arrested
in Kinston murders
KINSTON -- One of three men wanted on charges in connection with a June 23 shootout that killed two people and injured five others has been arrested in Greenville, Kinston police said.
Derek Level "Twin" Suggs, 21, of Kinston was charged with murder and placed in the Lenoir County Jail without bond.
Suggs was accused of taking part in the death of Lageana Brown, 25, with Milton Lee Jones. The third suspect, Keith Wayne Bryant of Greenville, is wanted on charges in connection with the death of Suggs' identical twin brother, Dante Romel "Twin" Suggs.
Federal marshals, acting on a tip, found Derek Suggs in a Greenville apartment.
Kinston police said they do not know why the shooting occurred at what they said was a liquor house in east Kinston.
Dante Suggs was shot inside the house, placed in a car driven by his brother and then thrown out as the suspects evaded police. Ms. Brown was fatally shot outside as she tried to get another victim out of the house.
2 hurt on scooter
Two people on a scooter were injured Thursday night at South Virginia and West Chestnut streets in what may have been an intentional collision, Goldsboro police said.
The operator, Mileek Hakeem Oates, 18, of South Slocumb Street, and his passenger, James D. Raye, 19, of Olivia Lane, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, but they left against medical advice, a spokeswoman said.
Oates told police that he was going south at about 9:55 p.m. when an oncoming, northbound car in the left lane collided with the scooter. The other driver, perhaps a black woman, fled in what was described as a blue Pontiac. Oates reported the collision about 45 minutes later from a home in Goldsboro.
Police said no physical evidence could be found at the scene.
In other collisions:
*Damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end crash at 6:41 p.m. Friday at West Grantham Street and a ramp to U.S. 117, police said. One driver, Bunnie Willis III, 42, of Durham, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The driver of a tractor-trailer truck, Michael Ray Ebert, 35, of Ray, Ohio, was stopped to make a left turn.
*Damages were put at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 8:39 a.m. Thursday at East Beech and North Herman streets, police said. A southbound driver, Marion Ray Bradford, 53, of Lassiter Road, Princeton, was charged with a stoplight violation. The other motorist, Deets Taylor McCullen, 66, of Northview Drive, was going east.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Five packages of lottery tickets were stolen between Tuesday and Thursday from Credit Solutions of the Carolinas at 605-B U.S. 70 East, Goldsboro police said. An employee was notified that a man tried to cash in a stolen ticket in Fayetteville. The tickets, valued at $1,500, were deactivated, police said.
*A tan and orange 1982 Ford F-150 pickup truck was stolen Thursday from the 200 block of Woods Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, Bernice F. Chavis, also reported the theft of a ladder system after a storage building was damaged. The pickup and ladder were valued at $1,650. Damage was set at $50.
