Secondary roads will get state help

The state Department of Transportation will spend $2.3 million over the next two years to repave and otherwise improve secondary roads in Wayne County.
District Engineer Tim Little explained the improvement plans at this week's meeting of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.
The department plans to repave sections of Swinson Drive and Kermit Warren Road at a cost of about $200,000. Also, Union Grove Church Road will be repaved from N.C. 581 to N.C. 222 at a cost of about $90,000.
A project that wasn't completed last year will be finished in 2006-07, Little said. DOT crews are piping 385 feet of a roadside ditch on Baker Chapel Church Road, to provide a firmer shoulder along a curve. The project cost is estimated at $50,000.
The Department of Transportation also plans to widen and resurface more than a mile of New Hope Road, from Best Road to Wayne Memorial Drive, for an estimated $130,000.
The department sets aside money each year for unexpected road maintenance that might be needed. In the 2005-06 program, the department anticipated needing $150,000 for surveys, right-of-ways and emergency services driveways. The department also set aside $310,000 for shoulder repair, spot stabilization, safety projects and other repairs in last year's program.
In the 2006-07 secondary road program, the department plans to use $175,000 for contingency funds and $310,000 for any unexpected maintenance.
Also in this year's plan is a project to repair about 1.5 miles of Moye Road from Black Creek Road to Old Black Creek Road. The project is expected to cost about $270,000.
Highway workers also will widen and resurface a 2.5-mile mile section of Emmaus Church Road from Indian Springs Road to Pineview Cemetery Road and a three-mile section of Dobbersville Road from U.S. 13 to Steven's Mill Road. The anticipated cost for both projects is about $525,000.
The state also will spend about $130,000 to construct a right turn lane on Pikeville-Princeton Road at its intersection with U.S. 117 in Pikeville.
