Two injured in
hit-and-run crash;
driver is charged
Two people were injured Monday in a hit-and-run, rear-end collision at West Grantham and Elizabeth streets, Goldsboro police reported.
A stopped, westbound driver, Linda Blackmon, 51, of Smithfield, and her passenger, Amber Deans, 21, of Smithfield, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
The other driver, Fredy Corado Garcia, 38, of Morgan Circle, Dudley, was apprehended soon after the 6:37 p.m. collision in the 1400 block of West Grantham Street.
Garcia charged with two felony counts of hit and run and one count of no operator's license, fictitious registration and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $8,000 secured bond.
Damage was estimated at $3,000 to Ms. Blackmon's car and $1,000 to the sport utility vehicle that Garcia was driving. It was registered to John Eduardo Marroquin of Morgan Circle, Dudley.
U.S. 70 wreck
A wreck on U.S. 70 at Lake Wackena Road stalled traffic Monday afternoon.
State Highway Patrol Trooper R.T. Edwards said a 1985 Volvo station wagon driven by Margaret Atkinson, 56, of Wayne Avenue, allegedly pulled in front of a 1994 Toyota driven by Doris Perdue, 74, of Jamestown.
Edwards said Mrs. Perdue was driving approximately 55 mph when the collision occurred. He also said Mrs. Perdue was carrying three passengers from the Greensboro area. The trooper's report had not been completed by mid-morning.
In other collisions:
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 3:45 p.m. Saturday on Old Grantham Road near Providence Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Shaquithia Monique McKinney, 19, of Old Grantham Road was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The van that she was driving, valued at $700, was demolished.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a wreck at 9:45 p.m. Saturday on Country Club Road near Club Knolls Road, where he swerved to miss a deer, the Highway Patrol said. Christopher Bryan Pearsall, 19, of Country Club Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed. Damage was set at $1,200.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 6:24 p.m. Friday on New Hope Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Eric Dean Williams, 16, of Cross Place was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with failure to maintain lane control after the vehicle ran off the right side and struck a mail box and a ditch. Damages were put at $4,100.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 12:15 p.m. Friday on U.S. 70 near Lake Wackena Road, the Highway Patrol said. A westbound driver, Margarita Vasquez, 47, of Dollard Town Road, told troopers that everything stopped working on her car and it collided with a van in the right lane before running off the right side. The other driver was Kent Randall Smith, 44, of Jacksonville. No charges were filed.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a three-vehicle collision at 10:37 a.m. Friday at U.S. 13 and Charles Massey Road, the Highway Patrol said. Two eastbound drivers, Edward Joseph Lewis, 46, of Bladenboro and Gary Milton Hill Jr., 30, of Parkstown Road, LaGrange, were charged with failure to reduce speed. Lawanda Gale Jackson, 35, of Harper House Road, Four Oaks, had stopped to make a left turn.
*Damages were put at $9,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 12:18 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. 70 and Bridgers Road, the Highway Patrol said. A westbound motorist, Betty T. Crocker, 56, of Selma, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver was Guillermo M. Martinez, 32, of True Vine Road, Pikeville.
Deportation looms
A Goldsboro driver wanted by federal immigration authorities was arrested today by Goldsboro police and charged with driving while impaired and no operator's license.
Alonso Rodas, 48, of North Leslie Street was placed in the Wayne County Jail to await deportation by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to Mexico. He was given a $500 secured bond on the two local charges after he registered .16 percent blood-alcohol content, the citation said.
Britthaven fire
A predawn fire today near the front porch at Britthaven at 2401 Wayne Memorial Drive was considered suspicious and referred to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for a further investigation.
Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris said the fire had not been set but started in a smoking area near the front door, got into a pillar and spread to the roof.
Pinewood, Saulston, Belfast and New Hope volunteer firefighters answered the 2 a.m. call and put out the fire. The amount of damage was not immediately available. But the area was cordoned off with yellow evidence tape as repairs were being made.
Sex charge
A sexual assault on an 8-year-old girl was cleared Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with the arrest of a Pikeville-area man.
Shawn McKell Howard, 34, of Daw Pate Road was charged with taking indecent liberties with a child. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Howard was baby-sitting the girl and her younger sister and was a friend of the children's parents, Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom said.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A book, two compact discs, an ear piece and clothing were stolen between Sunday and Monday after a car door was damaged in the 100 block of Stagecoach Lane near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, Shannon Daniels, put a $98 value on the stolen property.
*A headrest monitor system and a mobile DVD player were stolen between Wednesday and Monday from a sport utility vehicle in the 100 block of Joy Avenue near Pikeville, deputies said. The resident, James David Etheridge Jr., said his property was worth $1,600.
*A Ford transmission was stolen today from a barn in the 800 block of Riverbend Road, deputies said. The owner, Rufus A. Hamilton Jr. of Goldsboro, said it was valued at $2,500.
*A yellow utility trailer was stolen between Saturday and Monday after a lock on a gate was cut at Casey's Garden Center at 2360 U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The trailer was valued at $1,300.
*A red lawn mower was stolen between June 22 and Monday after a lock was cut on a barn in the 300 block of Five Points Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, J.B. Hood, estimated the mower's value at $150 and damage at $10.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $10 was stolen between Sunday and Monday from a vending machine at La Paws Grooming Parlor at 145 N. Center St. The thief had thrown a brick through a window, inflicting about $50 in damage to get inside and then $50 in damage to the machine.
*An unlocked blue, four-door 1994 Oldsmobile Delta 88 was stolen Monday from the 1300 block of North George Street\. The owner, Ronnie Wells of Goldsboro, admitted that he had left the key on the floor.
Drug charge
A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony drug offense on U.S. 70 East. Brendan Joseph Garris of Brothers Road, LaGrange, was charged with possession of cocaine and two traffic violations, fictitious registration and no operator's license. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
