Wife shot; retired captain charged

A Goldsboro woman was shot Friday night in her home in the 100 block of Woodsmill Drive, according to a Goldsboro police report. Her husband, a retired Goldsboro police captain, said it was an accident but he was charged with felony assault.
Mary Cogdell, 56, was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, officials said.
Mrs. Cogdell told police that her husband, J.D. Cogdell, 57, had stood in the doorway to her bedroom and shot her. Cogdell said the weapon had discharged accidentally.
A shift supervisor and three investigators responded and began a further investigation of the incident. They notified Maj. Jay Memmelaar, who called Chief Tim Bell, who asked the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate.
Cogdell, who retired about a year ago from the Police Department, was charged by the SBI with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond under the state's domestic violence laws.
Cogdell's first District Court appearance to decide his legal representation was scheduled for Monday.
Cogdell joined the department in 1993 as a patrol officer after leaving the Air Force. He was promoted to investigator in 1997 and then to captain in charge of C-shift in 2002.
Bell said Saturday night that he had few details on the case.
