Man charged

with assault

A man and a woman were awakened before dawn today by a man who threatened to kill them and then assaulted them, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.

Camila Perez, 39, and Eugenio Perez, 21, told deputies that the man had barged into their home at about 12:15 a.m. in the 100 block of Darlene Drive near Dudley.

Hulbert Velasquez Arriaga, 26, of Wilmar Lane was charged with felony first-degree burglary and assault on a female. Arriaga was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,900 secured bond.

Garage fire

Spontaneous combustion on Saturday was believed to have caused a fire that damaged a utility room in a garage and a house at 303 Hunter's Creek Drive, a Goldsboro Fire Department official said today.

Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said fertilizer and oil-based products ignited at about 7:30 a.m. He said the fire had not been set and ruled out an electrical problem.

Damage was estimated at $1,500 the house, and smoke damage was set at $50,000 to the contents, including two vehicles in the garage.

The two-floor home, owned by Eddie Singleton, was valued at $200,000, and contents were valued at $200,000, Whaley said.

Drug charges

Three Goldsboro men have been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.

Aaron Bruno King, 29, of Gulley Street and O'Brien Devon Kornegay, 23, of North Kornegay Street were charged Friday with manufacturing cocaine and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.

Joshua Passerrello, 22, of Country Day Road was charged with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed under a $1,500 secured bond.

Investigations

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:

*Six prescription medicines were stolen Friday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Meadow Court. T.L. Miller estimated the value of the stolen medicines at $275 and damage at $150.

*About $150 was stolen Sunday after a window was smashed at the Subway restaurant in Mar Mac. Damage was set at $400.

*Gunshots damaged three windows at Johnny's Convenient Mart on N.C. 111 South. Damage was put at $1,200.

*A car radio and compact disc player combination was stolen from Sandstone Drive and N.C. 111 South. Crystal Leigh Helmick put a $200 value on the radio and set damages at $400.

*A .22 caliber pistol was stolen Saturday after a window and a door were damaged in a home in the 1400 block of Genoa Road. Malcolm Lee Southerland put a $300 value on the weapon. Damages were set at $650.

*A Mercury 20-horsepower boat motor and a tool set were stolen from an unlocked garage in the 5000 block of Wayne Memorial Drive. Richard Lee Ward said his property was worth $960.

Thefts

Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:

*A DVD player was stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a window was broken at a home in the 100 block of East Oak Street. Michael Almond put a $50 value on the player. Damage was set at $300.

*A red, four-door 1997 Buick Century was stolen from the 600 block of East Walnut Street. The key had been left inside, the report said. The car is owned by Jean Hinton of Dudley.

Driver injured

A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 10:55 a.m. Saturday on East Ash Street near North Berkeley Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. Jackie Paul Draper, 83, of Dover was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with improper passing on the right side. The other driver was John Martin Kessler, 47, of East Ash Street. Damages were set at $4,000.

Also, damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 11:47 a.m. Saturday on the U.S. 70 bypass, near Oak Forest Road, police said. Annie B. Collie, 73, of West Doe Trail, was charged with reckless driving after her car collided with a car stopped in the median crossover and driven by Gerard F. Becker, 64, of Chafin Road.

Missing

A 14-year-old boy has been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Vance Decarol Roddick of 299 Durham Lake Road, Dudley, was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When he was last seen June 26, he was wearing blue-jean shorts, white T-shirt and black high-top sneakers. Anyone with information on his location is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
