Kayla Shivar elected president of state Future Farmers of America

Kayla Shivar, a recent graduate of Spring Creek High School and a rising freshman at North Carolina State University, has been elected president of the North Carolina Future Farmers of America.

Ms. Shivar, who plans to study agricultural education, will lead the 16,000-member state organization during the 2006-2007 year. As president, she will be active across the state, representing agricultural education and serving as an ambassador for young people involved in agriculture.

Other members of the Spring Creek FFA chapter were active at the state convention.

Maura Phipps, Lisa Mozingo and Lindsey Merryfield served as convention delegates.

Hannah Singleton performed a jazz routine during the talent competition.

Several chapter members competed in career development events. Blake Rousay competed in prepared public speaking. Amanda Kiefer competed in extemporaneous speaking. The team of Ryan Kiewert, Hannah Singleton, Kayla Mozingo and Alex Benton competed in the quiz bowl, and the team of Mitchell Kohnen, Kayla Shivar, Joshua Singleton, Jonathan Sutton, Brooke Patton and Rex Price competed parliamentary procedure, taking home the second place prize.

Also, the Spring Creek FFA had four members receive the State FFA Degree: Mitchell Kohnen, Christopher McSwain, Phillip Lee and Jonathan Sutton.

The chapter also was recognized for its participation in the FFA PALS program, a program for at-risk middle school students.

The chapter was a gold finalist for the National Chapter Award and earned a Membership Growth Award for having added 35 new members during the 2005-2006 school year.
