PIKEVILLE -- The town of Pikeville continued a nine-year tradition Saturday as the Pikeville Lions Club sponsored their annual Independence Day Festival.

The day-long program, which included several events, games and ceremonies, culminated in the late evening with a fireworks display.

The festival kicked off Saturday morning with a 5K run, which was followed by a car show, lawn mower pull, horseshoe competition, hay ride and other events.

Entertainment was provided by a number of young performers including the Charles B. Aycock Jazz Ensemble and contestants in the Young and Teen Pikeville Idol contests. Country Roads Band also performed for the crowd.

By mid-morning the crowd of close to a hundred residents grew larger and some estimated that hundreds showed up for the fireworks display. Other key events in the program were the crowning of Miss and Mr. Independence and awarding of Pikeville Distinguished Citizen honors.
