House fire
PIKEVILLE -- Unattended cooking was blamed Monday for a fire that heavily damaged a home at 398 Mount Carmel Church Road near Pikeville, a fire official said Tuesday.
The woman resident "had walked out of the house to talk to someone in back or in the shop," Pikeville Fire Chief Wesley Wooten said, "and people came by and told her that smoke was coming from the house."
Wooten said she had been canning or cooking and when she returned, she saw the smoke. The fire damaged the kitchen and extended into the attic. Wooten said firefighters cut a vent in the attic to control the fire.
The brick and frame house and contents, owned by Rufus and Minnie Howell, were valued at about $150,000 to $200,000, the chief said. Damages were estimated at more than $50,000.
About 12 firefighters each from Pikeville and Patetown answered the 1:11 p.m. call with several trucks. They needed about two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Drug charges
Two Goldsboro men were arrested Tuesday by the Goldsboro Police Department's Selective Enforcement and Housing Authority units and charged with felony drug offenses after a search of a home in the 300 block of East Elm Street.
James Nathan Crawford, 31, was charged with maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Julius Isidore Reid, 21, of East Beech Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Eighteen bags of marijuana were seized.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A central air conditioner, the tin roof on a shelter, a couch and a baby swing were stolen between June 19 and Tuesday from a rental mobile home in the 100 block of Webber Lane near Dudley, deputies said. The thief had damaged eight windows to get inside, the report said. The owner, Mona L. Fields of Dudley, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,150 and damages at $4,000.
*Two diamond wedding ring sets, three gold wedding bands, another diamond ring, a 1969 Southern Wayne class ring, a digital camera and medicine were stolen from a home in the 100 block of Grand Street near Pikeville, deputies said. The resident, George Thomas Miller, put a $1,637 value on the property. The date of the theft was not known.
*A door glass and a window were smashed before dawn today at Johnny's Convenient Mart at 766 N.C. 111 South, deputies said. Damages were estimated at $1,200.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An intruder dragged a grill under a window, damaged a screen and then used a butter knife to open the window and enter a home in the 800 block of Newsome Street, police said. The resident, C.E. Sheppard, also said a pair of jeans were taken between Monday and Tuesday, shredded by a lawn mower and left outside. Damages were estimated at $80.
*A television and a stereo system were stolen between Monday and Tuesday after a door was forced open at a mobile home in the 3100 block of Central Heights Road, police said. The resident, Alonso Rodas, put a $155 value on his missing property.
*A four-door, black 1995 Chevy Lumina was stolen between June 19 and Tuesday from the 2300 block of North William Street, police said. The owner and resident, Glenda Wilkins, said the car was worth $2,100.
Accident
A trailer broke loose from a truck at 9 p.m. Tuesday on Patetown Road and struck a power pole and phone equipment near Industry Court, causing about $7,000 in damages, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Ralph Junior Wall, 52, of Country Club Road, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to secure a load. His truck and trailer were not damaged.
Missing
Three teenagers have been reported missing by relatives to Goldsboro police.
*Lance Kelvin Lanier Jr., 15, of 1100 N. Jefferson Ave. was described as black, 5-feet-7 and 179 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When he was seen last at 10 a.m. Sunday, he was wearing a black T-shirt and black jeans.
*Tarvelle Donta Johnson, 15, of 1709 Beech St. was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 140 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When he was seen last at 8 p.m. Saturday, he was wearing a white shirt, red pants, black shoes and a black hat.
*Dalisa Sadilya Barnes, 16, of 102 Pineview Ave. was described as black, 4-feet-11 and 112 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. When she was seen last at 11:30 p.m. Monday, she was wearing a white and blue shirt, blue jeans and white shoes.
