9 people injured
in accidents
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $66,700 in 11 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car collision at 4:28 p.m. Monday at South Slocumb Street and Bunche Drive, Goldsboro police said. Susie L. Shepherd, 54, of North Marion Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. James C. Stephens, 28, of Party Road, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 11:12 a.m. Monday at Vine and North William streets, police said. Bobby Samuel, 31, of Atlantic Avenue was released after emergency-room treatment. Samuel was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $1,700.
*Three people were injured and both cars were demolished in a collision at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at N.C. 55 and Billy Price Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, James Stanley McCarty, 19, of North Beston Road, LaGrange, and his passenger, Anthony Joshua Torres, 17, of Beston Drive, LaGrange, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Jorge Emanuel Bravo-Gonzalez, 23, of Turkey Road, LaGrange, was listed today in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Bravo-Gonzalez was charged with a yield violation. McCarty was charged with improper passing. The cars were valued at $8,500.
*A passenger was injured in a two-car, rear-end crash at 12:09 p.m. Friday on Miller's Chapel Road near Long's Plant Farm Road, police said. Trevor Highsmith Jr., 17, of Miller's Chapel Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Joyce W. Jones, 66, of Pineland Avenue, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $200.
*Damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-car wreck at 5 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 13, north of Hood Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ian Kelly Swank, 28, of Greenville, was charged with driving left of center.
*Damages were set at $10,500 in a two-car, rear-end collision at 11:02 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. One eastbound motorist, Jack J. Priess, 86, of Durham, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A tractor-trailer truck driver, Curtis Wayne Smith, 52, of Clinton, was charged with a safe-movement violation after a collision with a sport utility vehicle at 12:01 p.m. June 6 on N.C. 55 near Grantham School Road, the Highway Patrol said. Damages were put at $5,100.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 6:35 a.m. June 6 on Parkstown Road near Mark Edwards Road, the Highway Patrol said. Michell R. Miller, 32, of Kinston was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were fixed at $3,200.
*Damage was estimated at $6,000 in a one-car crash at 3:15 p.m. June 6 on N.C. 55 near Shady Grove Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Jennifer H. Fishman, 20, of Oak Ridge Drive, Dudley, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $15,600 in a two-vehicle accident at 3:28 p.m. June 6 at Rosewood Road and an entrance to Rosewood Middle School, the Highway Patrol said. Ashley Brooke Goff, 18, of Mint Court was released after emergency-room treatment. April Ann Pfeiffer, 16, of Camden Park Drive, was charged with a yield violation.
*Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Peedin, 29, was involved in a wreck with a sport utility vehicle at 10:09 a.m. June 1 at U.S. 117 and the entrance to the Neuse River Shopping Center, the Highway Patrol said in a report released today. No charges were filed after Peedin's patrol car collided with the rear of a SUV driven by Mandy Marie Lofton, 57, of Prayer House Lane, Dudley. Damage was set at $400 to the patrol car; the SUV was not damaged.
House fire
A candle that had tipped over in a bedroom was blamed for starting a fire that damaged a home at 801 E. Mulberry St., a Goldsboro fire official said today.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said a resident had tried to put out the fire. By the time firefighers arrived five minutes after the alarm, Whaley said the fire "was rolling out of the windows. There was heavy fire and smoke on our arrival. We did a quick knockdown and then conducted salvage and overhaul."
Whaley said the fire was controlled within 10 minutes.
Nineteen firefighters answered the 9:22 p.m. call Saturday with four engines, a ladder and a command car. The remained for about an hour and a half
Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the home, occupied by Deborah Galbreath and owned by William Turner of Goldsboro, and $3,000 to the contents. The one-floor, brick home was valued at $55,000. Contents were valued at $15,000.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A computer and a monitor, a television and a combination DVD player and video cassette recorder were stolen between Friday and Monday from Northeast Elementary School at 1769 Pikeville-Princeton Road, deputies said. The thief had pried open a door to get inside, the report said. The stolen property was valued at $1,285.
*Two handguns and a rifle were stolen between Sunday and Monday from a home in the 500 block of Dollard Town Road, deputies said. The resident, Keri Edwards, put a $1,200 value on the firearms.
*A battery-powered drill and charger, a tool box and tools were stolen between Sunday and Monday after a truck door was forced open at Reese Sign Services at 3271 U.S. 117 North, deputies said. The property was valued at $829.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A silver, four-door 2000 Saturn was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 500 block of West New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said. The car, owned by the resident, Latesa Renee Pixley, was found burned in Duplin County. It was valued at $3,200.
*A compact disc player was stolen Monday after a car window was smashed in the 1800 block of Royall Avenue, police said. The owner and resident, Melinda Ruffin, said the player was worth $300 and set damage at $200.
*Vandals inflicted an estimated $1,175 in damages between Sunday and Monday at the Food Lion supermarket at 553 E. New Hope Road, police said. A trailer, the building, a power box, a freezer and a bathroom door were spray-painted with graffiti.
*A silver, four-door 2001 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen Monday from Carolina Motor Co. at 4245 U.S. 70 East, police said. The value of the repossessed car was not listed.
Burglary charge
A 27-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with first-degree burglary at a home in the 100 block of Country View Drive. Engelbert Gutierrez was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
Victim treated
A Goldsboro man who was wounded by a gunshot Saturday night has been treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. Lawrence Wall, 40, was shot at about 11:15 p.m. in the 400 block of West Ash Street. The unknown assailant had struck Wall first with a baseball bat, police said.
Missing
A 25-year-old man was reported missing Monday from a group home at 1219 Emmaus Church Road, Dudley. Sammy Braswell was described as black, 5-feet-9 and 140 pounds with a thin build, short black hair and brown eyes. When he was seen last at noon Monday, he was wearing a burgundy T-shirt and black pants. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
