Man wounded
A 40-year-old Goldsboro man was wounded Saturday night in the 400 block of West Oak Street, Goldsboro police reported.
Lawrence Wall was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
Wall told police that he was standing in the street at about 11:15 p.m., when a man walked up from Carolina Street and yelled at him to leave someone else alone. The suspect then swung a baseball bat at Wall and shot him in the left leg, the report said.
The suspect was described only as black and he wore a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Body found
The body of a 45-year-old woman was found before dawn today in her home, according to a Goldsboro police report. The victim was identified as Phyllis Pemberton Warren of 517 Hickory St. The victim's husband, Willie N. Warren, said that he discovered her unresponsive at about 5 a.m. She was pronounced dead by rescue personnel.
Intruder caught
A man heard noises before dawn today in his home in the 100 block of Country View Drive and found an intruder inside, Goldsboro police reported.
William Edward Howard of Beaufort called 911 about the burglary and detained the intruder until police arrived.
A kitchen window screen had about $50 in damages from the burglary, the report said.
Engelbert Gutierrez Villalobos, 27, of Country View Drive, was arrested, the report said. Charges are pending.
Kitchen fire
About $3,000 in damages was reported Saturday from a kitchen fire at 1006 S. Andrews Ave., the Goldsboro Fire Department reported.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 10:42 a.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car and found light smoke through the house. Lt. Willie Lee said the stove, floor, carpet and a doorway were damaged.
The home, valued at $80,000, is owned by Dorothy Cooper. Contents were valued at $50,000, the report said.
House fire
Unattended cooking was blamed for a kitchen fire that caused about $15,000 in damages to a home at 1273 Rosewood Road, a fire official said Friday.
Oakland Fire Chief Jack Howell credited an unidentified resident with saving most of the one-floor brick home that was owned by Shirley Martin and valued at about $180,000.
"She used good thinking to throw water on the cabinets," Howell said. "That slowed the fire and smothered it. It could have been a lot worse if she had not thought to do that. Most people don't think to do that."
Howell said smoke and flames were not visible from the outside but when the door was opened, he said there was smoke.
Oakland, Rosewood and Little River volunteers answered the 1:30 p.m. call. They needed about an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Drug charges
Two Goldsboro men have been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Timothy Alan Washington, 46, of East Pine Street was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of prescription medicine. He also was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 secured bond.
*Derrick Crawford, 27, of Country View Drive was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and resisting arrest. He was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Pre-dawn crash
Damages were estimated at $11,300 in a three-car collision at 2:32 a.m. today at Olivia Lane and Hugh Street, Goldsboro police said.
Bethany G. Brown, 21, of Willy Drive, LaGrange, was charged with reckless driving after the car that she was driving had collided with two parked autos. The other cars were registered to Sabrina Ann Hairston and Porter B. Barnes, both of Olivia Lane.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $3,900 worth of property was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a home in the 600 block of Thunder Swamp Road near Mount Olive. The thief had damaged two doors and a wall, the report said. The resident, Benjamin Aaron Soistman, reported the theft of a computer system, two satellite television receivers, a television, a video cassette recorder, 10 videotapes, a stereo system and $250. Damages were set at $250.
*Three fields along the 2100 block of Piney Grove Church Road were damaged between Thursday and Friday by vehicles, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. James Ivey and Jerry Sutton reported damages of about $1,800, and Tommy Raynor reported $400 in damages.
*A .45 caliber handgun, a necklace and a pair of earrings were stolen between Friday and Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Timothy Street near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, Clinton Lee Bizzell, estimated the value of the stolen property at $800 and damage at $200.
*A gold watch and three $20 bills were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a door glass was broken in a home in the 900 block of U.S. 13 South, deputies said. The resident, S.S. Dobson, said the watch was worth $3,000. No damage estimate was listed.
*A combination radio and tape and compact disc player was stolen between Thursday and Saturday after a door glass was broken at a home in the 100 block of Rae Ann Drive, deputies said. A gunshot also shattered another window and damaged the interior, the report said. The resident, Shelton B. Sutton, put a $300 value on his property and set damage at $275.
*A silver 1996 Plymouth Voyager was stolen Friday from the 100 block of Bridgers Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, Ramos Filiciano Hernandez, put a $4,500 on the van.
*A 32-inch television was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a home in the 400 block of Bladestone Drive, deputies said. The resident, S.T. Hardy, said it was worth $1,700.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A calculator, cosmetics, a book bag and a compact disc player were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after two cars windows were smashed in the 1000 block of Sunburst Drive, police said. Stephanie Carol Whitfield of Seven Springs put a $250 value on the CD player and set damage at $100. Kellie Amanda Jones of LaGrange estimated the value of the other stolen property at $195 and damage at $100.
*A small refrigerator, a microwave, a power paint roller and five other rollers were stolen between Thursday and Friday after a door was damaged at a home in the 800 block of North George Street, police said. The owner, Brenda Johnstone of Goldsboro, estimated the stolen property's value at $200 and damages at $100.
*A combination radio and compact disc player and an amplifier were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a car window was shattered in the 600 block of Rudolph Street, police said. The owner, Charles Ray Leonard Jr. of Goldsboro, said his property was worth $480.
*Compact discs, valued at $1,200, were stolen from an unlocked car in the 1600 block of Maple Street, police said. Windows on two other vehicles were broken, but nothing was reported stolen.
