Goldsboro police had promised a continued crackdown on prostitutes after eight women were arrested and charged last week.

They arrested 13 more Thursday night and charged them with procuring for prostitution.

One woman was charged with a felony drug offense, while eight others were charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest also were filed.

Police have dubbed the sting "Operation Clean Streets." Officers from Capt. Al King's C shift concentrated on several areas, including A, Leslie, Kornegay, John and Carolina streets, after receiving citizen complaints.

"We have been working with the District Attorney's Office," said Maj. M.D. Hopper, who supervises the patrol division. "We're trying to get them jail time, especially those who have been charged in the past, so that they get cleaned up."

Plainclothes officers worked for six hours during the operation.

After the arrests, the women were taken to the Magistrates' Office, where they were charged and placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of secured bonds between $2,500 and $5,000.

King said the department will continue to investigate prostitution complaints and "to clean our streets of criminal activity." He said more arrests are possible.

"We encourage the citizens to keep calling in," Hopper said. "We need willing witnesses to charge them. We'll keep at it."
