Teen is charged
in robbery attempt
A teenager from Dudley was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with four felony offenses in connection with an attempted robbery and shooting.
Octavius M. Broadhurst, 19, of Cheryl Drive was charged with attempted armed robbery, discharge of a weapon into occupied property, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $200,000 secured bond.
Broadhurst was accused of taking part in an attempted robbery of five people in a car May 20 in the 1100 block of North John Street, Investigator M.K. Horstmann said.
The victims -- three teenaged men from Greenville and two teenaged girls from Goldsboro -- told police that five black men had approached their car and one shot into the vehicle several times, striking two people. The two victims, both men, declined hospital treatment. Broadhurst was identified as the shooter.
Broadhurst was arrested at 12:25 p.m. at South Center and Spruce streets. The other four suspects have not been found.
The car, driven by Juante Deshawn Johnson, sustained about $800 in damages from gunshots, the report said.
Barn fire
A tobacco barn near Falling Creek Church and Sambo Lambert roads was destroyed Wednesday night in a fire that authorities are calling arson, because the barn had no electricity.
Grantham, Thoroughfare and Mar Mac volunteer firefighters were summoned and put out the 7 p.m. fire.
The barn was owned by Patricia S. Hinnant of Pikeville, the report said. The estimated value was not immediately known.
After deputies responded, Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris, Detective Richard Winders and Emergency Services official Delbert Edwards were called and investigated the cause of the fire. Detectives said the fire was definitely set.
Van stolen
A 13-year-old boy allegedly stole a van from a group home and then lost control of the vehicle before it rammed a propane gas tank, Goldsboro police said.
The boy was charged in a juvenile petition with felony larceny of a vehicle and not having an operator's license. He was not injured during the brief joy ride.
The boy found the key and stole the van Wednesday night from the John Oliver Center at 102 Whitfield Drive, the report said. After turning off West Chestnut Street, he turned around in the circle at the end of Chestnut Circle and then lost control of the van, and it struck the gas tank in the back yard of 708 W. Chestnut Street, the report said.
Damage was estimated at $3,500 to the 2005 Kia van and $2,000 to the propane tank and yard at Nathaniel Cogdell's home.
In other collisions:
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 10:04 a.m. Wednesday at East Elm Street and Lee Drive, Goldsboro police said. Tessara Doron Kornegay, 20, of Longleaf Avenue was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with reckless driving after the pickup truck had run off the right side, struck the curb and overturned. The truck, valued at $3,500, was demolished.
*A driver was injured and the car that he was driving was destroyed in a wreck at 6:40 p.m. Monday at U.S. 13 and Durham Lake Road, the Highway Patrol said. Quincy Demont Durham, 28, of Buckingham Drive, Dudley, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was listed today in good condition, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with reckless driving and suspicion of driving while impaired after the car had run off the right side, struck trees and overturned. The car was valued at $15,000. Other damage was set at $500.
Man charged
A 26-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with second-degree burglary and larceny.
Jeremy Ray Crawford of Hinnant Road, Pikeville, was accused of breaking into a relative's home in Rosewood on Monday and stealing a television, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Crawford was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A white 2006 Nissan Titan pickup truck was stolen between May 24 and Wednesday from Deacon Jones Nissan at 1220 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro police said. Employees discovered the missing vehicle, valued at $37,020, during an inventory check.
*A yellow and black 2003 Suzuki sport bike was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 3200 block of N.C. 222 East, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, Shonique Hicks, put a $5,000 value on it.
*A green 1996 GMC Jimmy truck was stolen Wednesday from the 100 block of Bridgemont Drive, deputies said. The owner and resident, Juan Rios Cruz, said a man had stolen his spare key from a relative's house. The vehicle was valued at $4,500.
*A home stereo system with a compact disc player and speakers was stolen between March 31 and Wednesday from a home in the 400 block of Adler Lane, deputies said. The system, owned by the resident, Tony E. Moore, was valued at $1,000.
Marijuana found
Two marijuana plants were found Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in eastern Wayne County.
Deputy William Wells said he had received a tip about the plants. After investigating with his search dog, Remco, he found the plants that were valued at $4,800. The plants were destroyed. The owner has not been determined.
