Mount Olive OKs one special use, denies another

MOUNT OLIVE -- Town commissioners approved one resolution permitting a special use and denied another Monday night at their monthly board meeting.
Commissioners approved a resolution to allow a commercial dog kennel to be permitted as a special use in the agricultural-rresidential district.
Dennis Reynolds made the request to build a kennel on Hatch's Hill Lane, north of downtown Mount Olive.
Commissioners denied a request by Donald Atkinson to allow an adult day care facility in the commercial district on Center Street.
Danny King of A little Direction, Love and Affection day care, addressed town commissioners during the public forum. King said his organization provides crime prevention and social development programs for children in Mount Olive.
"I want to see the town do more," King told commissioners. "If we're going to make this an attractive town, we need to do it as a whole," he said. "We're here to help and to aid Mount Olive in the best that we can do, but we cannot do it without your support."
Town Attorney Carroll Turner drafted an ordinance prohibiting the obstruction of streets, alleys and sidewalks owned by the town. It was adopted unanimously.
The town will enter into a term loan agreement with Southern Bank to purchase a 2005 Case tractor at a cost of $15,415.
Mount Olive Commissioners also adopted a resolution supporting House Bill 2619 that would return $209 million Gov. Mike Easley withheld from local governments during a budget crunch in 2002. The bill is sponsored by Reps. Louis Pate and Lucy Allen.
