3 women robbed
in beauty shop
The owner of a beauty shop and two other women were robbed Thursday at gunpoint by two men, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
One suspect bit the phone line in half so that the victims could not call for help, the report said.
The owner, Sylvia G. Britt of Mount Olive, told deputies that two black men entered her shop at 505 Woodland Church Road at about 6:05 p.m. The armed suspect demanded that the women give up their valuables, the report said.
Ms. Britt reported the theft of a cell phone, $40, a pocketbook and personal papers. Donna Hudson of Mount Olive said her cell phone, ring and wallet with $200 and personal papers were taken. Margery C. Smith ofGoldsboro listed a diamond ring, valued at $3,000, and a pocketbook with $80 and personal papers as being stolen.
The total value of the stolen property and cash was estimated at $3,938.
The gunman was described as being 6-feet tall with a skinny build, and he wore a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a red bandanna over his face. The other robber was described as being 5-feet-6 with a medium build, and he wore blue jeans and a blue bandanna.
Mobile home fire
A double-wide mobile home at 100 Larchmont Circle was damaged heavily from a fire that was believed to have been caused by an electrical failure in a dishwasher, officials said.
The fire spread quickly from kitchen cabinets to the attic, Mar Mac Fire Chief Bill Harrell said. The fire was confined to that area, but smoke and heat damaged the entire home.
"They did a good, quick knockdown," Harrell said of volunteer firefighters from Thoroughfare, Mar Mac and Grantham.
The unidentified residents were not home when the fire started at about 9:30 a.m. But they arrived in time to salvage some clothing and personal belongings, Harrell said.
Crime of the Week
The larceny of farm equipment has been selected by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as this week's "Crime of the Week."
A John Deere lawn tractor, valued at $11,900, a trailer, valued at $4,000, and trailer ramps, valued at $150, were stolen May 20 and May 21 from Quality Farm Equipment on U.S. 70 West.
Anyone with information on this larceny or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
2 hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $12,900 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A motorcycle collided with a Goldsboro police car at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at West Ash and North George streets, Goldsboro police said. The motorcyclist, Donnie Rowe, 39, of Pecan Road, Dudley, was not injured, but he was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Rowe had made a wide right turn and the bike collided with the northbound patrol car. Officer Stacey O. Hatcher, who was transporting a detainee, had stopped for a red light. Damage was estimated at $300 to the motorcycle, registered to James Eugene Spruill of Short Street, Dudley, and $2,000 to the police car.
*A man lost control of a moped, was ejected and injured at 12:29 p.m. Thursday, police said. Cornelius Jones, 18, of Edgerton Street was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said Jones had run off North Jackson Street into Herman Park and struck sand. The moped was not damaged.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 2:05 a.m. Sunday on Genoa Road near Potts Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ronnie Clark Ginn, 21, of South Everittsville Place, Dudley, was treated, admitted and released from the hospital. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed and suspicion of driving while impaired. The report said his sport utility vehicle had run off the right side, then careened off the left side out of control and struck trees. The SUV, valued at $2,500, was destroyed.
*A train collided with a westbound sport utility vehicle at 5:03 a.m. Saturday on Booker Street near Pikeville, the Highway Patrol said. The SUV had run off the left side and had become stuck of the tracks, the report said, and the driver fled. The train's engineer, David Sexton Johnson, 52, of Spring Hope, could not stop in time. The SUV, valued at $8,000, was demolished. It was registered to Sonya Jeanette Young of Rose Street. Damage was set at $100 to the train.
Rings stolen
A man and wife took their diamond wedding rings off Wednesday and put them in a bag in order to play basketball at Berkeley Park and then discovered Thursday that they had left the bag, Goldsboro police said.
Samuel Jerome McIntyre of Goldsboro said the rings were worth $2,400. About $20 and the bag, valued at $5, also were taken, the report said.
Wayne County law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*A white 1988 Mercury Gran Marquis was stolen Thursday from the 100 block of Pitts Road after the key had been left inside, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, Robert D. Adams, put an $800 value on the car.
*A blue and gray 1984 Dodge Ram pickup truck was stolen Thursday from the 700 block of North James Street, police said. The truck, owned by Marshall Williamson of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,800.
Drug charge
A 22-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with a misdemeanor drug violation after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Devon Anton Smith was charged with marijuana possession after an investigation at his home on Creech Street. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $300 secured bond. An investigation of the crime has not been completed, officers said.
