Special Olympics Wayne County has named its two Athletes of the Year for 2006.

Rob Presson, 14, was chosen Athlete of the Year for the schools and 31-year-old Shannon Moore is athlete of the year for independents and agencies.

The son of Jack and Janet Presson of Goldsboro, Rob is a student at Greenwood Middle School. He has participated in Special Olympics for the last four years. He has competed in equestrian events and bowling at both the local and state level.

Shannon has been involved in Special Olympics since he was a small child, his mother said. His interests include bowling, track and field and basketball, with him competing in local games and at the state level.

His parents are Archie and Dorothy Moore of Goldsboro.

The Athlete of the Year awards began in 1992 and are given in memory of two Special Olympians, Beverly Rafferty, who died in 1992, and Bobby Gurley, who died last year.
