Habitat for Humanity will build home in one week during 'blitz'

Volunteers will raise the walls Monday on a house in Harris Street Estates as part of the national 2006 Habitat for Humanity Home Builders Blitz.
The national event will include more than 130 Habitat affiliates putting up hundreds of homes in a single week, Beth Parrish, director of the Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro and Wayne County, said.
The blitz is the largest Habitat project of its kind in the country, she said.
"It gives many low-income families the opportunity to own their own home," Parrish said. The national organization estimates that by the end of the week, 400 new homes will be erected across the country.
Professional home builders of every trade volunteer their time and expertise in the blitz build effort.
The local effort is being planned by a committee of the Home Buiders Association of Wayne County under the leadership of Ken Jones of Ken Jones Construction & Inside Trim and Brian Walker of Walker Construction. They have gathered subcontractors and suppliers to obtain the materials and labor needed for the project.
The new house will be the home of Cecilia Menley and her son, Brad.
