Fire destroys
Mar Mac house
A one-floor brick home at 8013 Summit Drive was destroyed Sunday in a fire that started in a camper shell, a Wayne County fire official said Monday.
Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Harrell said the camper had been backed against the house and was fully involved when the first engine arrived.
The homeowner, Steven H. Shafer Jr., and his family were attending church when the fire started at about 11 a.m. No one was injured.
Harrell said a little propane canister attached to the grill had exploded and several 20-pound cylinders of LP gas had gone off. He said the neighbors had heard the explosion.
"It got into the attic," the chief said of the fire. "The whole attic was burning when we got there. It didn't take long."
Firefighters tried to go inside but could not stay very long, because the roof was about to collapse, Harrell said.
Shafer was notified about the fire, came home and saved some keepsakes from his military service.
The home was valued at $85,000. The contents were valued at $25,000. About $15,000 worth was damaged.
About 15 Mar Mac volunteers were joined by about 15 each from Thoroughfare and Arrington to battle the blaze. Some remained for up to five hours to make sure "hot spots" did not flare up. Dudley and Grantham volunteers assisted in salvage operations. Wayne County rescue personnel checked on the firefighters' safety.
"It was only in the low 80s," Harrell said, "but it was mighty hot. My guys were exhausted when it was over."
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A lighted sign and four floodlights were damaged between Sunday and Monday at Pine Forest United Methodist Church at 867 Rosewood Road, deputies said. Damages were estimated at $2,400.
*A leather seat, a window and a door on a sport utility vehicle were damaged Monday, deputies said. The owner, Carmen Coffey of Princeton, had left the SUV in the 1200 block of Stevens Mill Road. Damages were set at $3,500.
*A 12-gauge, double-barrel shotgun, a .22 caliber rifle, a drill and a jar of pennies were stolen between Friday and Monday after a door was pried open at a home in the 800 block of Norwayne School Road, deputies said. The resident, Stanley Preston West, put a $950 value on his property.
*A landscaping curb machine was stolen Monday from the 400 block of Stanley Chapel Church Road, deputies said. The owner, Delbert Earl Melvin of Temple Hills, Md., was storing the machine, valued at $5,000, at a shelter outside of a relative's home.
Thefts
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An air conditioner was stolen between Saturday and Monday after a door was damaged at Rhodes Funeral Home at 708 S. Slocumb St., police said. The unit was valued at $300. Damage was set at $25.
*A black, two-door 1997 Pontiac Grand Am was stolen between Monday and dawn today from the Dunleavy's night club parking lot at 2715 E. Ash St., police said. The owner, Jo A. Wood of Goldsboro, said the keys had been left inside. The car was valued at $7,000.
Driver injured
An eastbound driver was injured in a two-car collision at 11:06 a.m. Monday at South Slocumb and Harris streets, Goldsboro police said. Carla H. Sauls, 49, of Fulton Road, Dudley, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said, but her condition was not immediately available.
Ms. Sauls and a northbound motorist, Jeanne R. Yelverton, 80, of Rawlings Street, said they had the green light. No one was charged. Damages were set at $4,000.
Sex offense
A 43-year-old Goldsboro man has been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with a second-degree forcible sex offense.
Rodney Spencer Barnes of Quail Drive was arrested after an investigation of an incident on May 18, Sgt. David Kelly said. Barnes was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Missing
A Charles B. Aycock High School student was reported missing Monday to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. John Thomas Ball Jr., 18, of 1291 Old Harvey Sutton Road, Mount Olive, was described as white, 5-feet-10 and 160 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
When he was seen last on May 17, he was wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
