Counting on all roads leading to Goldsboro, Dillard/Goldsboro alumni are planning another extravaganza for their 51st annual homecoming celebration this weekend.

Memorial Day weekend is traditionally packed with activities. Area hotels are typically at capacity as the alumni converge.

This year's theme will be "Answering the Call, Ensuring Our Children's Future Through Giving," with the focus on scholarships.

The celebration kicks off on Thursday evening beginning at 7 p.m. at Goldsboro High School with the scholarship and awards program and crowning of a new queen. Honored guests this year will be scholarship contributors -- individuals, families, foundations, and past kings and queens.

Last year, $54,000 was awarded to high school graduates, said Thelma Smith, one of the weekend's organizers.

"To date, over $360,000 has been awarded through the efforts of our contributors," she said.

Other events planned for the weekend include a parade, golf tournament, three dances, two picnics and a Sunday worship service. Many of the events will take place at the H.V. Brown Cultural Center on Poplar Street.

"The weekend is filled with exciting events," Mrs. Smith said. "There is great fun and fellowship for all."

The Alumni Archives room at the alumni center will be open for visitation all weekend, she said. The room features an array of memorabilia collected and donated over the years.

Special guests also attending the festivities will be the Hubbard Alumni from Forsythe, Georgia, the local group's sister alumni association.
