Woman pinned in Pikeville crash

Three people were injured and two vehicles severely damaged in a crash this morning about seven miles west of Pikeville.
A van driven by Shari Sherene Nichols, 20, of Little Dove Road, Pikeville, was attempting to turn left onto Pikeville-Princeton Road from Gurley Dairy Road when the crash occurred, Highway Patrol investigators said.
The Dodge Grand Caravan turned in front of a Chevrolet TrailBlazer headed eastbound toward Pikeville, Trooper Mike Anderson said. Kristie Carol Anderson, 30, of Ron's Landing, Pikeville, was driving the TrailBlazer.
Also in the Dodge was Nichols' sister, Maya McFadgen, 11, also of Little Dove Road.
All three involved were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, but were being transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital this morning, Anderson said.
Nahunta Fire Department and Little River Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Little River firefighters stood by with hoses, while firefighters from Nahunta extracted the driver of the Dodge. At about 8:20, Ms. Nichols was freed from the vehicle and taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
"Everything worked real well. Nahunta did an excellent job and my guys did a nice job also," said Little River Chief Mike Aycock. "When we have a pin-in like this, they always do the extraction, but we always pull a line off in case there's a fire in the vehicle during the extraction."
Anderson said Ms. Nichols would likely be charged with failure to yield.
